Peter Ebdon booked his place in the last eight of the World Championship with a 13-9 victory over Mark King.
The final session was a strange mix of good break building and poor potting, with both players often seeing the funny side of their errors.
The 2002 winner won the first two frames, with breaks of 79, to take an 11-6 lead before King clinched 18 and then 19, with a break of 121.
They shared the next two, before Ebdon stayed composed to clinch the 22nd.
Ebdon, who has appeared in three finals, admitted that at times the match was not great to watch.
"It was a tactical affair, scrappy and we both got bogged down a bit," he said, with a tie against Ali Carter or Shaun Murphy awaiting him.
"I felt very comfortable with myself out there and I'd like to think that whatever Mark threw at me tonight I would have been equal to.
"I'm very, very pleased to get through to the next round. Shaun Murphy and Ali Carter are both top players but I feel very well prepared, the long matches suit me and there will be no-one trying harder.
"I've certainly put the work in, physically I'm in great shape and I'm swimming every night if I'm not involved in an evening session.
"I've had two tough matches and hopefully as the tournament goes on I will get the opportunity to flow, but if not I'm prepared to grind it out."
King added: "Peter is a great player and I missed too many silly balls and lost too many close frames on the pink and black.
