Event 9 Under 17 2008 Willie Thornes

Sam Harvey won the 9th Event of the Willie Thorne Under 17 series, Willie Thorne’s, Leicester beating the host club’s James Jelley in a close tussle 3-2 to claim his first Main title in the event.

The winner who reached the plate final in three successive months earlier in the year looked to be well in control of the final winning the first two frames easily with breaks of 27,34 and 36 (75-21)(84-32).

But Jelley 2nd in the rankings had other ideas taking the match to a decider with breaks of 28 and 45 (64-21)(60-10).

Harvey held himself together to win the final frame on the blue (72-38).

The modest entry of 11 first played in two groups Harvey won all his matches three of them 2-1 then in the last eight overcame Thomas Barley and Andrew Foster 2-0.

Jelley 2nd behind Harvey in the same group defeated Harvey Chandler 2-0 and May’s winner Tom Kerslake 2-1 who made the highest break of the day a 62.

Riddaway off the mark
Young Josh Riddaway opened his title account beating newcomer Darryl Turner 2-0 in the plate final completing the Greyfrairs club double.
