The 2006 world champion suffered the injury playing football in China last week, forcing him to withdraw from the lucrative Shanghai Masters.
The world number 13 fell awkwardly while playing in goal during a kick-about with his fellow players.
He said: "I'm very disappointed. I went to the club but couldn't cue properly."
"It's very frustrating, but there was nothing I could have done. I would have played with a cast on if I could, but it just wasn't possible.
"The doctors have told me I could be out for anywhere between six and eight weeks, which is not the news I wanted to hear."
