QUALIFIERS
2009/2010

 

Seven venue’s for this seasons EASB English Amateur Championship whittled the 177 entrants to last 16 North and South to be played on May 1st and 2nd at Northern SC, Leeds and a Southern club yet to be announced.

Ian Glover and Antony Parsons have made the highest break so far 135 both made at the Yorks and North East qualifier.

 

North West – Bolton SC – 22 players

N.Whalley, A.Milliard, R.Williams, D.Burns.

 

Whalley won two of his three matches 4-2, Milliard (64,49/43) came back from 3-1 in his final match too beat Mike King (53), Robbie Williams let slip a 3-1 lead over Robert Valiant in the 1st round who made a 63 break for 3-3, Williams defeated James Silverwood 4-2 to qualify.

Darren Burns edged Ian Burns (90,57) 4-3 after surrendering a 3-1 lead the winner made a 80 break in his first match.

 

Yorkshire – North East – 46 players

J.Lisowski, S.Wilkes, M.Rhodes, A.Duffy, A.Parsons, K.Johal, R.Clark,

J.McGouran, Scarrington.

 

World Snooker Academy’s Jack Lisowski trailed Shaun Parkes 3-2 in the first round then overcame Chris Keoghan and David Portman both 4-2 Portman made a 124 break in his 1st match.

Wilkes made breaks of 122,75 and 70 earlier plus a 58 and finally 93 in the decider over Jonathan Bagley.

Last seasons runner up David Craggs started brilliantly with runs of 108,78 and 64 to beat Sam Craigie English Under 16 Champion 4-0 from 3-1 down beat Jeff Cundy losing out 4-1 to fellow Durham player Michael Rhodes.

Adam Duffy won both of his matches 4-3 firstly against former winner David Grace (61,61) and Jamie Barrett 109,71 in the 1st round, Duffy 125 in the last match.

After a walkover Parsons with breaks of 135,55,52 and 47 beat Craig

Waddingham 4-1, Kuldesh Johal top of the PTT North Rankings beat Damien Wilkes also 4-1.

Ryan Clark beat Gareth Green 4-2 and John Astley 4-3, James McGouran made breaks of 61,56,94,82 and 57 in his two games beating runaway PJT leader Stephen Craigie 4-2 in the final round.

Lastly Stuart Carrington endured a five hour wait and a 3-0 deficit to beat Ian Glover 4-3 after Glover had made breaks of 135,79 and 69 in his 1st match.

 

East Midlands – Willie Thorne’s SC – 13 players
O.Brown, J.Gillespie, Kyren Wilson.

 

Young Oliver Brown survived 10 hours of play to beat Lee Shanker 4-3 to register his best performance to date, James Gillespie won both his two matches 4-0 the former English Team winner with Cambridge SC whitewashed Jamie O’Neill in the 1st round.

Kyren Wilson raced through his matches 4-0 over Lee Crombie (118,108,71) and 4-0 against Gary Spencer 57 and 105 on a maximum.

 

West Midlands – Golden Cue Club – Bilston – 28 players

D.Ward, C.Wakelin, M.Mann, C.Downing.

 

With the heating broken at the chosen venue Brierley Hill SC the qualifier moved on the day of play to Bilston.

Former World Amateur runner up Daniel Ward beat Maria Catalano 4-1 who had beaten Reanne Evans 4-3, Ward bounced back from 3-1 down to edge Liam Highfield who trailed Ryan Evans 3-1 in the 1st round.

Teenager Chris Wakelin who leads Zone 3 RJT qualified with breaks of 63,87 and 60 twice, Mitchell Mann beat Geoff Williams 4-1 (84,73) and Rob James 4-2 from 3-2 down with 76 and a 69 in the final frame, James had knocked in contributions of 107,70,64,89 and 63 in his 1st two matches.

Callum Downing claimed the 4th place in the last 32.

 

East – Chelmsford SC – 21 players
A.Burden, N.Jones, S.Harvey

 

World Amateur Champion Alfie Burden strolled through with three 4-0 wins, Nathan Jones quickly followed with two 4-0 verdicts the last over Syd Wilson who made the area’s only century 101 in the 1st round, Sam Harvey won both of his matches 4-1.

 

South East – London – Grove SC – Romford – 45 players

R.Causton, L.Fernandez, M.O’Donnell, S. Bullock, R.Somauroo,

N.Jennings, H.Abernathy.

 

Tennager Ryan Causton won his first two matches 4-3, Leo Fernandez only lost two frames in his three matches ex finalist Martin O’Donnell included breaks of 63,58,54,62,60 and 53 in his three games.

Sean Bullock made breaks of 120,92,68 and 63, Richard Somauroo, Nick Jennings and Hugh Abernathy all comfortably qualified, Jennings featuring with breaks of 90,67 and 64 in his 1st match.

Jordan Church made the day’s highest 126 but lost 4-3 to Simon Munday.

 

 

South West – Riley’s – Plymouth – 11 players
G.Batten, A.Wicheard.

Greg Batten defeated Grant Cole 4-3 on the black to book his place in the next stage after trailing 3-2 to Cole’s 77 break.

Adam Wicheard who leads the PTT Southern Rankings easily qualified.

Ben Harrison opened play with a 109 but lost 4-2 to Batten a member of English Team winners 2008.
