First Gold win for Impett

KEVIN Impett’s shock victory over ranking leader Jordan Winbourne lifted the 18-year-old to second place on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold Tour.

A 3-1 victory over the England international in the event-four final at the Ambassador Snooker Club, Bournemouth, wrapped up Impett’s first tournament win on the tour.

Impett, from Chandler’s Ford SC, said: “I was pleased because he’s been beating me recently so I got a bit of revenge.”

He saw off club-mate Daniel Woods 3-0 in the last-four.

Winbourne, also from Chandler’s Ford SC, made breaks of 50, 44, 44 and 41 in the group stages.

The 13-year-old beat 17-year-old Ben Tanner (The Academy, Eastleigh) 3-0 in the second semi and remains top. Tanner is third.

Making his debut in the competition, Chris Richards, from Roath Labour Club, near Cardiff, could consider himself unlucky not to reach the knockout after battling our three five-frame matches.

The fifth tournament in the series is at The Academy, Eastleigh, on March 7.

Double delight for Silver leader Warner

 

BACK-to-back tournament wins have taken Gosport’s Lee Warner to top spot on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour.

 

Warner, who triumphed in Swindon in December, hit the front after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Chandler’s Ford debutant Bouwe Bosma in the event-four final at the Ambassador Snooker Club, Bournemouth.

Astonishingly, both finalists beat their highest competitive break in the match.

Warner, based at Stoke Snooker Club, led 2-0 with a personal best 76. Bosma, 14, pulled one back with a 62 clearance and then forced a decider. Warner sealed a 3-2 win on the blue.

And Eastleigh’s Liam Burnet also notched up a new high break. The 15-year-old left-hander fired in a 69 in the round-robin group stages.

The breaks mean all three will gain promotion to the elite Gold Tour next season.

Burnet beat rankings leader and club-mate Lee Bell 3-0 in the quarter-finals but lost 3-2 to Warner in the last four.

Bosma disposed of the 2008/09 under-15 champion Bradley Chappell (Bournemouth) 3-1 in the second semi.

Also making his tournament debut, Mark Wells, from the home club, lost 3-0 to Warner on the last-eight.

The fifth tournament in the series is at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club on Sunday, March 7.

Who can stop Gavin?

 

IT’S three out of four tournament wins for High Wycombe’s phenomenal potter Ryan Gavin on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour.

Gavin brushed aside the minor blip of a semi-final defeat by Swindon’s Jodie Symes at Jesters, in December, and was back to winning ways at the Ambassador Snooker Club in Bournemouth.

He accounted for Swindon’s Joshua Lee 3-0 in the final.

The runaway rankings leader has now amassed as many points as second-placed Symes and Lee, in third, put together.

Gavin, who has now won 24 of his 26 matches across the first four tournaments, will compete on the Silver Tour next season.

The fifth tournament in the series is at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club on Sunday, March 7.

About Cuestars

 

Founded 16 years ago by director John Hunter, Cuestars runs grass-root snooker tournaments across the South of England and South Wales.

Competitions take place on Sundays between October and June, and cater for players aged eight to 80 - and in some cases even older!

All Cuestars tournaments, apart from the Team Challenge, are played off scratch. There are no handicaps. Cuestars uses a round-robin format leading to a knockout.

The Cuestars ‘South of England’ Championship Tour, which has no age limit, consists of eight tournaments. The top-16 ranked players will be invited to the end-of-season play-off for the title of Cuestars ‘South of England’ Champion. And the top eight aged 50 and over will play off to find the Cuestars ‘South of England’ Masters Champion.

There are three under-21 tours. Gold is for players with a high break of 60 or more, Silver is for players with a high break between 40-59 and Bronze is for players with a high break of less than 40. After eight tournaments, the top-eight ranked players from each tour will be invited to the end-of-season play-offs to find the Gold, Silver and Bronze ‘South of England’ Junior Champions.
