Gary Kevany Reports

Gary Kevany is an Irish journalist, who has contributed to several newspapers in the Ireland and is now writing for MaXimumbreak, Gary will be visiting many tournaments to report on the event and to interview professional and amatuer players alike.

Since a very young age Gary has been an avid follower and indeed participant of snooker.

Unfortunately, at the moment, the town he lives in is about to be deprived of a snooker club. Although the club is dilapidated and the tables clearly in need of rennovation the snooker club has been a part of the town (Ballina, Co. Mayo, Ireland) for the past quater of a century.

In his years playing, Garyby his own admission never became anything more than mediocre, winning local competitions, the occasional regional tournament, being player of the year and participating in the All-Ireland Club Championships.

Gary was also involved in an administrative role as secretary of Connaught Snooker at the age of 17.
Fortunately, during the time in school he became employed by the regional newspaper, the Western People, and was afforded the opportunity to write about a sport so close to his heart, snooker. Gary has conducted interviews with many of today's top snooker players, Jimmy White, Ken Doherty, Tony Drago, Mark Williams and Alex Higgins.

These articles will be published to the site over time. Not all of the articles he has written are archived on the online Western People site but will be uploading those he has. Gary has also covered local and national snooker events, however, doubt's those articles are worth uploading to the site as few could relate to the competitions or have much interest in reading about players from a small town in North Mayo but will provide some links to the articles; in his personal opinion they are far from enthralling and more matter-of-fact than the articles he has written about professionals.

Maximumbreak is extremely looking forward to Gary being a regular columnist for MaXimumbreak.com, and is currently working freelance, he's been looking for an internet site to hone his abilities further and hopefully MaXimumbreak will help gary reach a more interested audience than he would have publishing such articles in the local and regional papers that he currently reports for.

We would like to welcome Gary to Maximumbreak and wish him all the success in this snooker section.

Ballina Snooker Club proprietor Richard Gorman has essentially called for ‘game on’ with an open invitation to players, young and old, to try their hand at cue-sports. With propositions to bring Irish team coach, P.J. “Bubble” Nolan and perhaps a professional player down in the coming months. Richard, much like this reporter, looks back on the days of snooker in Ballina with great fondness.

Irish No.1 and snooker stalwart, Fergal O'Brien recently made his second trip off the beaten snooker track to play an exhibition against up and coming Ballina player, Jason Devaney. Making 10 breaks over 50 in 9 frames is nothing to 'baulk' at.

Alex Higgins Interview

Gary Kevany - 2007-02-06

Rather than saving the best ‘til last as most people would do, I’ve decided to start off with with my favorite snooker article I’ve written in my time as a journalist. In March of 2004 Alex Higgins and Jimmy White played an exhibition match in The Commons Inn, Co. Cork, fortunately not only did I get the chance to meet the two snooker legends but had the opportunity to interview both them. I have conducted interviews with professionals (incl. White) prior to – and after this – but decided to make, hopefully, a good first impression with the following article. Due to space restraints the article focuses on Higgins’ comments moreso than the exhibition matches. It was published in the Western People newspaper (based in my hometown, Ballina, Co. Mayo) on March 31, 2004. I am no longer employed full-time by the Western People but writing freelance while furthering my studies so hopefully will be uploading articles (both old and new) from time-to-time. Any feedback would be appreciated.
